Scope of Client’s Request
To acquire a professionally refurbished and self-propelled PRM / Ambulift, Model Type: ML6100D, to meet increased demand at this airport.
Equipment Information
The self-propelled PRM / Ambulift has been specifically engineered to ensure the safe and comfortable transportation of PRM passengers to and from the aircraft. The unit’s key features include a steel chassis, hydraulic lift system, insulated passenger cabin, driver’s cab, and retractable front-loading platform. This unit is a very versatile unit with service PAX service heights of minimum 1.0 up to maximum height of 6.1m, and can cater for a wide variety of narrow and wide body aircrafts. For transmission, the unit includes automatic hydrostatic drive, including park brake, as well as hydraulic powered steering.
Initial Challenges
This unit was manufactured in 2007 and was in non-operational condition.
Duration of Process
12 weeks.
Scope of Retrofitment Activities
- Initial assessment of the unit on arrival and ordering of parts.
- Stripping back of the unit to prepare for the in-house workshop blasting and painting preparation (see photos below).
- New hydraulic piping of the unit with in-house crimping and installation of unit.
- New electrical wiring loom and schematics designed, engineered and installed at Adapt GSE.
- Engine overhaul service and testing.
- Brand new GRP exterior, 50mm weatherproof panels supplied and fitted to PAX body.
- Brand new windows supplied and installed in the PAX body.
- Brand new Dhollandia Column Tail Lift supplied and fitted to the rear of the PAX body.
- Sourcing, fitment and testing of a Thermo King Air Conditioning System (called TK Shuttleaire S40) for the PAX van body.
- Brand new rear safety gates installed to conform with latest AHM legislation.
- Brand new front and rear PAX body hinge doors supplied and fitted.
- All new pins supplied and installed to main lift scissor.
- Scissor lift inspected and checked.
- New tyres installed and all brakes serviced.
- Brand new operator control boxes fitted to the platform and rear of PAX body.
- Full overhaul and fitment of all essential interlocks for the unit, including platform, scissor platform and stabilizer legs.
- Brand new emergency procedure implemented and pictograms installed in emergency control box on unit chassis.
- All new LED PAX body lights.
- Brand new wheelchair tracking and also attendant seating installed in PAX body.
- Final full extensive operational testing and checking by experienced Adapt GSE engineers.
- Loler test certificate for the lifting mechanism performed and certified for six months.
Client Feedback
Following the completion of the work, the client delivered a resoundingly positive response regarding the quality of the transformation of the Ambulift Model ML6100D, along with the attention-to-detail and efficiency in working to a very tight deadline to deliver the unit prior to year end 2023.
The client was also impressed with the total package, including the door-to-door transport logistics from Adapt GSE’s in-house logistics division.
The client commented on the absolute importance of the addition of the unit to their operations to greatly help to meet the increased demand for PRM movements within their airport operation. This is a hugely important aspect and requirement for the transportation for passengers with mobility issues, and improving access and comfort during boarding and disembarking.
As a result of the thorough engineering work carried out by the Adapt GSE team, the client is confident that efficiency, safety and passenger comfort and experience have all been significantly enhanced for the passengers and attendants utilising the equipment – therefore, reducing the risk of accidents and supporting compliance with safety regulations.

This was a very extensive and major refurbishment of the unit, taking the 2007 unit from a high state of disrepair to an almost brand new state and style, working under a very challenging lead time of 12 weeks from initial purchase order to final delivery of unit.
